He graduated from the University of Hartford three years ago as a cinema major with a communications minor. Ever since graduation, Taylor has run the ESPN truck for the university.
Skills
As the assistant director of new media at the University of Hartford, Taylor had to develop a certain skill set. To be the assistant director of new media, you need to have a certain skill set. The first skill you need is to know how to work certain software like the Adobe suite and the expression graphics programs. You also need to know how to do things like hardware, wiring, audio and replay.

Another key thing is that you need to know about technical directing, directing, producing and everything that goes into the production of a show. The assistant director of new media also has to know how to video edit, film, and direct. According to Taylor, his job is “Kind of like an all in one package.” He does it all.
A Day in the life
A day in the life of the assistant direct of new media is jam packed from the time you wake up until the moment you go to sleep. When you get into work in the morning, you start by going over the last games that either team has played that you’re filming that night. You then go through and plan your graphics and which athlete you’re going to highlight for the upcoming game. You also have to plan what your talent is going to say, go over the schedule with your operators and make sure you have enough people to run the show.
The next part of the day begins when you arrive at the truck. After arriving at the truck, you have to turn everything on and bring out cameras and set up the gear for everyone before they show up. Taylor says that “During the show you are kind of acting as a producer/director and a graphics operator.” You are constantly communicating with the talent, with the commercial breaks, and the rest of the production team. After the show you break everything down, clean up, and get ready for the next one.
ESPN
ESPN is a company that is constantly growing. As soon as Disney bought ESPN, it was one of the biggest moments for the company and ever since then they have always had a budget to play with. They are starting to get into more and more schools, smaller sports, and doing a lot more with their streaming. The ESPN truck at the University of Hartford streams their games on ESPN3. There are new camera systems coming out that they are constantly putting into use. They have a bunch of different sets and there are also new sets that they are creating that are more interactive and more creative.
Future goals for Taylor
Taylor would love to eventually work at ESPN in the future. There are a ton of different jobs that he can do there. It would be very interesting for him to be able to focus in on one specific area of his job. Working at ESPN would allow him to focus on one area instead of doing everything like he is currently doing at the University of Hartford.
